GARDEN CITY, NY -- December 13, 2004 -- Long Island's favorite and cherished newspaper columnist, Ed Lowe, begins a new chapter of his vocation today as he joins the Long Island Press staff after a 28-year career writing for Newsday.

Newsday's parent organization, the Chicago-based Tribune Company, recently began a number of lay-offs throughout the Long Island paper. Jed Morey and John Caracciolo, owners and co-publishers of the Garden City based Long Island Press, were determined not to let decision-makers in Chicago silence a Long Island legend.

"We are extremely proud to be able to keep this unique and honored journalist's voice heard," said Morey. "We have an obligation to Long Islanders to continue to bring them the stories that touch their lives from the man who they have experienced the wonders of this Island with, learned about their neighbors with and have grown with throughout the years."

"For close to three decades, readers have been dedicated to the talent, compassion, wit, insight and intelligence of Ed Lowe's writing, whether his stories are about his experiences or about ours," said Caracciolo. "We are excited to be the new outlet for Ed to continue his work."

In addition, Ed's column will also appear in South Bay's newspapers, a chain of seven weekly publications with a circulation of 120,000 across Long Island.

In his bio, as taken from an Ed Lowe website, Ed refers to himself as, "a recovering Irish Catholic, a recovering ex-husband, a recovering ex-teacher, grandfather, son, journalist, consumer, friend, automobile operator, dinner speaker and parent of teenagers."

Born in Brooklyn and a graduate of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, Ed was a junior high English teacher before becoming a reporter for The Suffolk Sun daily newspaper. After the Sun folded, Ed began as a reporter for Newsday, where he became a featured columnist in 1976. And there he stayed. Until now.

Ed has co-authored the books "The Patient Who Cured His Therapist" and "Uncharted Lives" (both published by Dutton/Plume) with New York psychotherapist Stanley Siegel. He has also edited two collections of his own stories and essays: "Ed Lowe's Long Island," and "Not As I Do -- A Father's Report." He serves as a regular panelist on "Father Tom and Friends," a weekly Cablevision show on TeLIcare and hosts a one-on-one interview program on the channel as well.

Ed has spoken in front of many business and community organizations and associations, including a large number of charities. He has keynoted staff conference days for more than 34 school districts and has spoken before statewide associations of education administrators for business, personnel and curriculum. In addition, he has delivered college and high school commencement addresses and appeared onstage at comedy clubs. Ed currently resides in Amityville, NY.
