Type of Position: Permanent Full-Time
At the Chico News & Review, the Features Writer/Editor is in charge of two weekly sections—Greenways (environmental feature) and Healthlines (health feature)— plus, a handful of annual special projects. The duties therein include coming up with ideas for and planning out each week’s section (including photos); writing stories and assigning stories and photos to other writers (staff, intern and freelance reporters and photographers); and editing the resulting copy. This position is also responsible for writing a weekly news feature for the Newslines section, and contributing to or writing cover stories, as assigned by the editor. The Features Writer/Editor will attend weekly editorial meetings to discuss timely issues, topics and events from which to develop stories, and must keep on top of current local affairs and trends. The Features Writer/Editor will write a minimum of two stories per week (one feature, one news feature, plus any accompanying sidebars) while also editing or writing a third feature and contributing to other projects as assigned by the editor.

General Purpose:

This is a writing and editing position.


40 hours per week; may need to work some nights and weekends, but mostly a daytime job.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Consistently meet deadlines

Works cooperatively with editors and art directors

Writing and editing

Story generation

Supervisory Responsibilities:



Knowledge and Abilities:

Ability to develop sources through networking, using the telephone and developing relationships with people outside of the office

Ability to identify leads for stories through observing situations outside of the office

Knowledge of reporting techniques and ability to write in a magazine style

Must be able to take direction and meet strict deadlines

Mastery of AP style, grammar and punctuation

Interest and knowledge in health care and green issues and trends

Must be an excellent multitasker

Basic photography skills

Education and/or Experience:

Must have two years experience as a reporter or staff writer at a publication. A college degree in journalism or related field is preferred.
