The Sacramento News & Review is seeking an experienced Editor.

Published weekly since 1989, the award winning Sacramento News & Review provides a lively mixture of news, features, commentary, arts and a calendar of events. Our alt weekly reflects our work environment: decidedly NOT corporate, yet an effective foundation of passion and professionalism topped off with an edgy but laid-back attitude.

Candidates must have the proven ability to deliver a fresh, innovative publication to readers through management of editorial staff and freelancers. An aptitude for news and a flair for motivating writers to produce stylish and compelling magazine-length stories required.

This is a managerial position, supervising all Sacramento editors, copyeditors, proofreaders and staff reporters. The Editor oversees the scope and subject matter of all editorial content in the newspaper. The Editor ensures that all content is factually accurate, and does not conflict with legal guidelines including libel and invasion-of-privacy laws. Works with Art Director to coordinate design of the newspaper. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. The Editor will also work with the CEO to seek out new funding opportunities for the paper and for potential additional reporters. The position is based in Sacramento.

Hours:

Typically 40 hrs/week

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Develop editorial vision, strategy, plans, and implement innovations, with the goals of improving the editorial quality and impact and increasing readership Manage editorial processes to maintain and improve overall efficiency and productivity Keep editorial expenses within budget Set high standards of quality and improve the writing and editing skills of editorial staff Ensure that there are no errors in spelling, punctuation, syntax or style in the editorial content of the newspaper; or supervise others who do this work Assign and edit the feature-length story and oversee the planning, assigning and editing of the stories in the News and Culture Sections Manage and develop staff to ensure a high quality product Identify and pursue ways that the News & Review can increase community outreach Identify and pursue ways that the News & Review can use its role to create positive change within our communities Work with Art Director to coordinate design of newspaper Work with Production Manager to coordinate deadlines and schedules, and resolve problems Assist publisher in efforts to find non-traditional sources of funding for journalism, by creating and presenting proposals and explaining the firewall between funding and reporting Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position supervises all Sacramento editors, copyeditors, proofreaders and staff reporters.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Affinity for the unique role of our paper in the community

Solid journalism background – strong understanding of libel and privacy law and journalistic ethics

Strong relationship building skills – ability to effectively manage staff and develop their skills; ability to partner with management and focus on common goals

Expert editing skills including ability to formulate stories, develop a diverse freelance team, coach writers and work with a variety of voices

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor's Degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Four years of writing for a publication and two years of editing experience required. Two years on alternative newspaper experience required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Required to drive a vehicle; must have valid driver's license as well as own transportation and automobile insurance.

The employee is frequently required to climb stairs, walk, sit, talk and hear

The employee is regularly required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch or reach

The employee must occasionally safely lift and / or move up to 25lbs

Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and typical of an office (phones, copy machines, printers).

The News & Review, along with many alternative weekly publications, has historically provided members of the medical cannabis business and adult business community opportunities to advertise their businesses, as well as private parties seeking relationships through the personals. A great deal of this advertising is handled through our classified department. As an employee of the News & Review, you may observe transactions involving medical cannabis products and services, and personal or adult advertisers. These transactions may include suggestive or sexual visual material, and suggestive or sexual information being relayed over the telephone or by e-mail. Additionally, the editorial content of our newspaper is often edgy and some readers may find aspects of certain stories unpleasant or disturbing.
