The Chicago Reader, the city’s illustrious free weekly newspaper, is hiring a creative mastermind to lead its small-but-mighty art department. The ideal candidate will have an artist’s aesthetic sensibilities, an editor’s eye for detail, and a news junkie’s appreciation for visual storytelling. Objectives of this role **Directing the creative vision of the Chicago Reader’s print publication through layout, design, coordination, and assignment of illustrations and other visual journalism **Establishing and maintaining art department standards for production, productivity, quality, and internal and external client service **Collaborating with the business side of the Reader on ad development and inhouse marketing materials and campaigns Required skills and qualifications **At least two years’ experience working in print, including editorial, agency, B2B publications, organizations, etc. **Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, or similar discipline **Proficiency with design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite, in particular InDesign and Photoshop **Exceptional capability with typography, layout, and prototyping **Strong creative vision with an understanding of print and digital publishing Preferred software and tool familiarity **Adobe Bridge, InCopy, and Illustrator **AirTable **Slack **Google suite Salary will be based on experience.
