The third AAN Publishers Conference will take place in Monterey, Calif. We’re doing things a bit differently this year by holding the sessions in locations that showcase the area’s natural beauty and unique offerings. The deadline to register is October 19.

Nonprofit Journalism: Competition or the New Frontier?
In the San Francisco Bay Area, local newspapers have cut their newsrooms by 50% in the last decade. And coverage of civic news topics has been cut dramatically compared to other topics such as sports and entertainment. To fill this gap, the Bay Citizen was launched in 2010 as a nonprofit, nonpartisan, member-supported news organization dedicated to promoting innovation in journalism and catalyzing citizen engagement with the news. We'll get an inside look from the recent editor of Bay Citizen, which produces its own content and collaborates by generating twice-weekly reports for the print version of the New York Times (California edition).

Jason Burnett is a city council member in the town of Carmel, a former EPA administrator on climate change (who blew the whistle on Dick Cheney's suppressing an EPA report), the former chair and one of thirteen trustees of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation -- the sixth largest private foundation in the country -- and a fan of the alternative press. What's his perspective on how foundations work? How might a foundation expand its priorities to include journalism projects? And how might AAN or your organization better position itself to attract foundation support?

Medical Marijuana Legal Defense
The future of medical marijuana dispensaries and their advertising is a little hazy. Kevin Goldberg is a recognized expert on First Amendment issues, with particular emphasis on newspaper and Internet publishing. His work includes representation of press organizations in lobbying efforts and in the protection of the rights and privileges of reporters. He also reviews news stories before broadcast by radio and television stations in order to identify and (if possible) avoid possible legal problems.

Registration Information and Fees
The Publishers Conference is open to AAN regular member publications only and limited to one publisher or senior manager from each member paper, or two partner-owners from the same paper. Attendance is limited to the first 30 registrants.

The registration fee is $400 per person, and includes continental breakfast, lunch and dinner on Friday and Saturday. Attendees may purchase a guest pass for both of the dinners for $150.
